In Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, the composer delivered a heartfelt love letter to his future wife. While reaching for emotion which went beyond words, he also stepped beyond the voice-centered works of his youth and into a new realm of purely instrumental music.
But first, Maurice Ravel realizes that the society he admires has a dark side — and that its enchanting culture comes with a tragic human cost — in La Valse.
