As the major urban center for a six county region, Downtown Fresno is home to many local, state and federal agencies, making government the largest employer. In addition to being the home of city hall, Fresno is also the county seat of Fresno County, and most county offices are conveniently located in Downtown Fresno. In addition to the main county courthouse, Downtown Fresno is also home to the Court of Appeals for California's Fifth Appellate District, and the Robert E. Coyle Federal Building, which houses the United States District Court for the Eastern Division of California. Other agencies such as Caltrans and the IRS also have a large presence in the downtown area.

The area also is home to the offices of many financial institutions, several radio stations, and many of Central California's top advertising agencies and marketing firms.
