On September 16, 1810, in the small Mexican village of Dolores, near Guanajuato, a Catholic priest, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, called for the end of Spanish rule in Mexico. This famous speech is today known as "El Grito de Delores." On October 18, 1825, the Republic of Mexico officially declared September 16th its national Independence Day.
"El Grito" is famous as the battle cry of the Mexican Revolution. Today, the event is commemorated late on the evening of September 15th, with a patriotic speech by the Mexican President before a crowd of thousands on the Plaza de la Constitución in Mexico City, with millions more watching on TV across the world.
El Grito in Downtown Fresno is a continuation of Fiestas Patrias and features a special closed circuit broadcast of this speech at 9:00 p.m. at the intersection of Fulton and Mariposa Malls.
El Grito is free to the public, brought to you by the Downtown Association of Fresno and Univision.
